Using eye drops correctly helps ensure the medication is effective and minimizes waste or discomfort. Here are simple, step-by-step tips for using eye drops properly:
✅ Before Applying the Eye Drops
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Check the label for the correct eye, dosage, and expiration date.
- Shake the bottle gently if it says “shake well.”
👁️ Applying the Eye Drops
- Tilt your head back or lie down, and look up toward the ceiling.
- Gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
- Hold the dropper above the eye (without touching your eye or lashes).
- Squeeze out one drop into the pocket of the lower eyelid.
- Close your eye gently for 1–2 minutes. Don’t blink or squeeze tightly.
- Press lightly on the inner corner of your eye (near your nose) for about 30–60 seconds. This helps prevent the drop from draining into your throat.
💡 Additional Tips
- Wait at least 5 minutes between using different eye drops in the same eye.
- If using ointment and drops, apply the drop first, wait 10 minutes, then apply the ointment.
- Don’t touch the tip of the dropper to your eye or anything else to keep it sterile.
- Store properly: Some drops require refrigeration, others don’t—check the label.
- If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for the next dose.
