Auto Refractometer

An auto refractometer is a medical device used to measure the refractive error of the eye automatically. It helps optometrists and ophthalmologists determine a patient’s prescription for glasses or contact lenses.

How It Works

  1. The patient looks into the device at a specific target (often a small image or light).
  2. The machine projects infrared light into the eye, which reflects off the retina.
  3. Based on the reflection, the device calculates the eye’s refractive error, including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.
  4. The results provide an estimate of the patient’s prescription, which can be refined with manual refraction tests.

Advantages of Auto Refractometers

Quick and easy – Takes only a few seconds per eye.
Accurate estimates – Useful for both adults and children.
Non-invasive – No discomfort for the patient.
